Way better than crutches...
« on: October 21, 2013, 08:08:07 AM »
...at least for long distances. It's about 20 minutes by crutch from parking lot to desk (Broken foot).  I checked out knee scooters and knee crutches but they're ridiculously expensive even on Craigslist.

One used kid's bike (CL $25) , a piece of 1/2" schedule 40 pipe from the back yard and a seat borrowed from my other bike and now it's faster than my normal walking pace. No pedals, I just "walk" with one leg while balancing on the bike.

After I'm done with it in a month or so I'll put the original parts back on and recycle it through CL or save it for grand kids.

That's clever.  I wish I had one of those when I broke my ankle several years ago.  That was a major pain.  I ended up using an office chair to scoot around the house when I needed to carry something from one room to another.  But once I left the house, getting around was more difficult.  I'm uncoordinated enough without crutches :)

I use the office chair some too at work. It's handy for getting back and forth to to fridge and microwave as they're just a few steps away. That's easier than the bike for carrying something that might slosh and spill.

A furniture dolly works well at home too. It's low to the ground and rolls easily on non-carpeted floors.
