Used TREX - composite decking question
« on: September 17, 2017, 06:13:21 AM »
A friend is offering used 12' Trex boards that were installed with hidden fasteners and appear to be in near new condition.  Is there any reason I should not buy these (for ~20% of the original cost)?  These are the TREX Enhance 1x6 that are sold in the big box stores - not 1st generation TREX which gets all granular and nasty.  I have two potential applications - one with 10' lengths and the other with ~5' lengths.

Anyone have experience installing used Trex (or other composite decking)? Is this stuff hard to reinstall?  I can find nothing on google search of this topic.

Thanks, aperture.

if in good condition i would say go for it. I dont see how you couldnt reuse them.

Just make sure to buy the hidden fasteners appropriate for composite decking and you should be good.

I'd want a better price than 20% off original cost.  You are buying them without a warranty.

I think he is saying 20% OF, not OFF, the original price.

Thanks for the feedback.  I went out and looked at the boards in question.  They had some discoloration that was easily cleaned up with a soft brush and soapy water.  A couple had been notched and one had been drilled through the face, but otherwise they were pretty much indistinguishable from new.  I went ahead and purchased them for ~$10/board.  If I have any trouble, I will update this thread to alert others.  Thanks, ap.

Nice catch!  That's a great price on that stuff.  I'm getting closer to finishing my own composite deck, so if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.  In my case, I'm actually screwing the boards to the joists from above, just for the extra rigidity (and cost savings).

Thanks for the offer of help zolotiyeruki.  I have some questions about screwing boards from the top:
(1) Are you predrilling?  If so with what diameter drill bit?
(2) Are you counter-boring and plugging?  If so, did you make your own plugs or purchase some?
(3) What size screw are you using to secure composite to wood?
(4) what other measures are you using to prevent mushrooming from the screw head?

Thanks again, aperture.

1) Yes, using (I think) a 5/32" bit.  The instructions say 3/16, but I couldn't find mine, and I wanted to leave a little bit more material.
2) No, so the screws are visible.
3) I'm using these screws, which are 2 3/4" in length.
4) Nothing special--the screws are specially designed for composite decking, so there's no mushrooming.  The top 1/2" or so of the threads is actually reversed, so they pull the material into the decking before the screw head has a chance to cause mushrooming.

I should clarify that I'm predrilling the composite decking, and not the joists beneath.  And the reason I'm pre-drilling is so that the screws are easy to start and will go in straight.
