Turning a covered porch into a 3 season room?
« on: December 20, 2014, 12:42:03 PM »
I'm starting to look at projects that I might take on in 2015 and one of the more promising current possibilities is putting up a wall to enclose our covered back porch.  The three walls making up the porch currently are brick and would be left "as is".  We're currently using the space as winter storage for our picnic table, lawnmower, grill, etc., but would like to have some outdoor space that keeps the elements/pests away.  I'll have to check with the local building inspector to see what classification this would fall under and what type of permits would be needed, but I was wondering if any of you had experience with any similar projects?  The porch floor is poured concrete and about 300 square feet.  There are already electrical outlets and overhead lighting on the porch, and we'd want to make sure our porch doors are large enough to fit the items we might store there.  Can you think of any other issues/suggestions to look at?

I'm considering calling a couple of contractors to come out and see what they think and get an idea of pricing.  I've done some framing and work around the house, but I'm not sure if this is a good DIY project at this point.  Thanks for any suggestions/advice!

So you only need to put up one wall with a door? DIY! Google the door and/or window framing. There really isn't much to it. I did the same thing to our porch except I had no walls, just steel corner columns and a corrugated fiberglass roof. Never did any framing before, but I'm a big DIY guy so I was confident I could do it. Probably saved $8k.
