Range cable to EV charger outlet - wire reroute
« on: June 03, 2024, 02:01:52 PM »
As part of remodeling our kitchen, I was left with a spare 50 amp circuit from a double oven combo that went away.

I want to reroute this away from the kitchen to the garage to become power for our EV charger outlet (NEMA 14-50). Also, I can unplug the charger and use it for my MIG welder.

The challenge here the cable is not long enough. I have purchased a roll of wire that is the right size. It is Romex Type NM-B 8-3 wire with ground.

Background: I was a Navy electrician but its been 30 years. I did alot of maintenance on a ship but did not install any new circuits. I need someone to verify my details.

I'm planning to put a 4" box in the ceiling of the basement on the side of a floor joist. Old cable in one side, new cable out the other side. Joining them with ???

One idea was to purchase a trio of Polaris type connectors or Southwire 65179640 uninsulated connectors plus 3M rubber tape topped with 3M vinyl tape.

And there is likely a wire nut for wires that size but due to the amps involved and long charge times, I think I like the idea of an allenhead threaded fastener locking the wire into a coupler better.

What have you seen out there? Most of the internet results I'm seeing mostly relate to 120V/15 amp circuits.

I believe you need 6ga for a constant load 50 amp breaker / 40 amp load.

Good to know. I appreciate the guidance. Off to find an ampacity chart.

You are correct for NM-B wire. Time to back up and verify what I have.

Is the original oven wire which is fed by a 50 amp breaker undersized? Wouldn't be the first time I found something in this house that was incorrect.

Joining them with ???

I would use split bolts for 6 gauge wire followed by electrical tape to insulate them from the box.

I am not an electrician, but I believe there's a capacity vs runtime calculation, e.g. if you're going to sustain 80% load for three hours you need bigger wire.

Note if you do run a 14-50 outlet for your charger, get an industrial-grade receptacle (Hubbell, etc). They're $50+ but the Home Depot variety (like Leviton) have been known to fail in catastrophic / dangerous fashion.  I smelled burning electronics in my garage and found my 2-3yo Leviton outlet literally melting:

Thank you folks. Yeah, definitely will need to upgrade my wiring and use a proper outlet.
Amazing that companies can even get a UL approval when selling that sort of light-duty outlet.

Worked on my car and porch last night. Back on the wiring project tonight. I need to run an outlet for my air compressor too.
Guess I'll run it on the former oven wiring which is overkill but whatever. The breaker will need to be properly downsized sized.
I share that same outlet with a 220V space heater in the winter that I occasionally run. Plug swapping as necessary.

Then I'll run new cable for the EV charger/welding machine. That'll be expensive as the breaker box is at the other end of the house.
At least there is a basement with a drop ceiling vs a crawl space.
