Temp backsplash for a rental?
« on: October 06, 2014, 12:01:57 PM »
My stove is up against a plain painted wall.  From cooking and frying, there are plenty of greasy spots and stains.  I'd like to give the wall a good cleaning and then put something up to make cleaning easier.  I'm in an old apartment and can't do much to the apartment.  And even if I could, I wouldn't want to put too much money into a crappy old kitchen anyway.   Is there anything I could put to make clean easier?  Foil paper would be one solution I suppose, but anything that is one step up?

What about getting a small section of a nice looking linoleum (possibly free on craigslist or freecycle) and mounting it to a stiff backing.  You could attach this directly to the wall behind the stove with those removable 3M adhesive strips.

Seconding what ChransStache said. A thign board cut to size covered in something you like. vinyl tiles or contact paper would be cheap ( they come in all sorts of varieties now like stainless steel). These are more money, but kinda cool looking (http://www.thesmarttiles.com/en/).

If you want less work, you can get a sheet of precut clear plexiglass  to hang/mount behind the stove  (probably $10-15 at home depot).

What about a chalkboard?  It would show oil spots but you could write on it etc.

Hmmmm...thanks for the suggestions, they have me thinking of some options.

I think I need something that is light enough to hang/adhere to the wall.  Or something that can sit behind the stove (where there's a drop to the floor) using the side counter space.  Will take a look around the next time I'm at Home Depot.

Can you let us know what you work out?  I just finished a DIY tile backsplash behind my sink in my rental.  (My slumlord wouldn't care.)  But I have the same sort of trouble with a stove--the side on the left is flush against the wall.  I'm not sure vinyl tile would work considering the heat from the elements is right there against it.  A piece of stainless sheet steel mounted with liquid nails maybe?

Yes please let us know!  I agree, vinyl would likely be a poor choice near an oven.  I believe linoleum is a lot more heat resistant than vinyl, but please don't take my word for it.

I think plexiglass would be a poor choice for the same reason, but real glass would work fine. (Google "painted glass backsplash" -- some of the results tell how to DIY.)

I likely won't be doing anything soon.  I don't have a car so I tend to do DIY stuff a handful of times a year---whenever I rent a car.  With the rental, I do my Target, Home Depot and Ikea runs.  Haven't pinpointed a weekend for a car rental any time soon.  But I anticipate at least one or two rentals before the year's over.

There's one solitary nail right in the middle of wall behind the stove.  Hopefully, I can yank it out fairly easily.

How about those stainless steel peel and stick tiles? Not too expensive and would do the trick.

There are a bunch of adhesive PVC or metal backsplash tiles that are cheap and would do the job.  Take a look here for some options:

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
