Sweep size for door gap coverage and astragals
« on: March 25, 2022, 11:23:18 AM »
Hey all,

Our front door has a gap at the bottom - I just measured and it's 5/8" at the largest and maybe around 1/2" on the other side. I'm seeing a few different sweeps and a couple interior ones where the description it says they cover "gaps up to X inches" (in this case 5/8" and 3/4"):

Would I want to stick with the first one that covers gaps up to 5/8"? Or would I be safer going with the slightly taller 3/4" one? I guess I'd be concerned about the overlap on the shorter side of the door - there's also a wood threshold under that so if it's too long, it could be problematic as the door closes or opens. I suppose with the taller sweep, you can just mount it up slightly higher though? The second one is more expensive and has a double-sweep it looks like too.

I was also thinking about replacing the old sweep (where the rubber strip is deteriorating) that's on the exterior of the door with this, which looks similarly shaped but the current exterior sweep is brass I think:

This is the front door showing the gaps:

EDIT: I also was wondering about how to seal the gaps at the tops and bottoms in between french doors. I've read about astragals and I think we have one but it's not long enough. Here is the french door:

Anyone have ideas on how to seal those points? BTW: I checked on the french door and it almost seems as though the astragal there now is built into the door. I'm guessing it's perhaps glued in place? My first that was to squeeze silicone into those gaps and try to 'extend' the astragal up. Or perhaps I can find some closed cell foam that I could cut to shape and glue to the top and bottom of the current astragal.
