Sticky keyboard keys on Dell Inspiron Laptop.
« on: February 09, 2023, 07:25:41 PM »
I have a few sticky keys on a Dell Inspiron laptop. As I am typing this note I am having no issues but then occasionally the n and b stick, as well as the space bar.

My laptop is a 2020 Dell Inspiron.

The keys are a low profile. I watched a video online where you sort of pick the edge of the key off and then clean with rubbing alcohol. That helped but the problem seems to come back.

I called Dell and of course it's out of warranty and they say I may have to replace the whole keyboard and by the time I ship it there and back it's $175.

What are my options? If you ever popped a key off there is another tiny white piece underneath that's delicate. I was nervous about trying to take that off for fear I'd snap it and be without a letter. :)

I have never spilled any liquid on the keyboard and generally keep it clean.

As an interim measure, plug a keyboard into the laptop and use that instead. Yes, that limits you in terms of positioning. But it keeps you functional while you prepare to deep clean the keyboard.

^ that may help.

Good luck to you! If you need to replace any individual keys, here's another Dell page that includes repair instructions but also what appears to be a computer model-specific search tool for finding replacement parts: https://www.dell.com/community/Laptops-Wiki/Laptop-key-install-keyboard-replacement/ta-p/5190158
