Snapped a bolt for my car’s roof rack
« on: April 15, 2022, 05:26:21 PM »
So I bought some roof rails for my car in anticipation of future road trips, was installing them myself, and snapped one of the 3/8” bolts while using a torsion wrench that must have not been working (or I missed the click). There is about 3/4” of the bolt, and I wasn’t able to remove it with my extractor and battery powered drill.

Is there anything else I should try on my own?

If I end up giving up doing it myself, who would I get help from? Mechanic?

What happened with the attempt using an extractor?

If I can't get an extractor to work, I use one of two options. A. I keep drilling out the stuck bolt until there are only threads left and then pull them out with an awl and pliers and then chase the threads clean with a tap or if they got destroyed and there is sufficient metal, drill out larger and tap a different size. B. If big enough, I tack weld a rod to the end of the bolt and turn it out.

If any of the snapped off bolt is exposed above the surrounding roof line, very carefully slot the top of the exposed bolt with a Dremel or somesuch, then use a  screwdriver to back it out.

If a good amount of the bolt is exposed, some vise grips may be all you need to back it out.

If it snapped flush with the roof or within the hole, @lthenderson is spot on.

Virtually any mechanic/garage can get that bolt out in a few minutes. Who knows, ask some friends if they've done it and can guide you...

I want to comment to say that I'd seriously look at getting bolts of equivalent size and thread pattern in a higher quality metal. Unless you were using a breaker bar or a 1/2" torque wrench, there's no way you should be snapping the heads off of those. I'd certainly not trust those bolts to have even 50+lbs of luggage on top of the car at highway speeds.
