Sink hole experts, I have a hole and don't know what to do
« on: July 02, 2022, 08:30:51 PM »
I have a new hole in my yard. Less than 2 ft deep. Not a region known for sink holes, no known problems underground. Soil is somewhat sandy. There is a sewer line about 3 ft away, but this hole does not expose it, the edge of the hole is about 3 ft from the sewer, and is extending in the opposite direction from the sewer. The sewer is newish, the previous owners had to replace the line so it is pvc. I get the sewer line cleaned out annually (the pvc doesn't go all the way to the street, and there's tree roots where the clay and pvc meet, about 25ft away from this), the line has been camera'ed and no issues noted in this vicinity. Basically, I have no reason to be concerned the sewer line is dumping water here. Hole seems to have opened up yesterday during a hard rain.

I'm wondering if it may be due to surface water drainage weirdness. The hole is right at the edge of a former rock bed which I've been digging out for the past few years. The hole is right at the spot where I'd last finished, which means there's a bunch of half buried plastic right there. I'm thinking that the combo of the plastic funneling rain and a periodically clogged gutter dumping extra water in that section may have caused this. But I'm not sure, and it's about 6ft from my foundation so I would like to be sure.

What should I be looking for here? What else is pertinent? What do I do with this hole?

Dig it out and make sure there are no pipes under there. I suspect you may have an old drain tile in there.

it could be an old tree stump that rotted out. it could be the sewer sucking sand in whenever a lot of water goes through the pipe.

Forgot about this post. I've had more rain, which made things a little worse, but I was also able to see what's going on. It does appear that a bunch of half buried plastic was directing water towards a specific spot, and that exactly where the hole was. I believe the initial void was created by previous digging to replace the sewer line, and possibly some mole activity. The water line and sewer line do not appear to be involved.

I've removed the plastic, dug around the area to collapse/expose other voids that I could see from the big one, then partially filled the whole area in. I will leave it alone for a while and monitor it, but at this point it's not dangerous for animals. If a new hole forms then I will have to dig further, but so far so good.

LOL, I have cats. That would be cruel to the fish and then I'd have wet, muddy cats running all over.
