I have a new hole in my yard. Less than 2 ft deep. Not a region known for sink holes, no known problems underground. Soil is somewhat sandy. There is a sewer line about 3 ft away, but this hole does not expose it, the edge of the hole is about 3 ft from the sewer, and is extending in the opposite direction from the sewer. The sewer is newish, the previous owners had to replace the line so it is pvc. I get the sewer line cleaned out annually (the pvc doesn't go all the way to the street, and there's tree roots where the clay and pvc meet, about 25ft away from this), the line has been camera'ed and no issues noted in this vicinity. Basically, I have no reason to be concerned the sewer line is dumping water here. Hole seems to have opened up yesterday during a hard rain.
I'm wondering if it may be due to surface water drainage weirdness. The hole is right at the edge of a former rock bed which I've been digging out for the past few years. The hole is right at the spot where I'd last finished, which means there's a bunch of half buried plastic right there. I'm thinking that the combo of the plastic funneling rain and a periodically clogged gutter dumping extra water in that section may have caused this. But I'm not sure, and it's about 6ft from my foundation so I would like to be sure.
What should I be looking for here? What else is pertinent? What do I do with this hole?
