Sidewalk Seal or Paint???????????
« on: May 15, 2014, 08:01:58 AM »
Last year we fixed a sunken portion of our sidewalk leading to the house that sunk far enough to crack the slab.  We leveled everything to make it safe, and poured new cement where the piece broke off.  Now the  section of new cement is a lighter color.

Is there something I can do to paint the sidewalk or seal it to make it all look like the same color again and make it pretty?

Give it time and the weather will even it out.  If you try to even it out, it will still weather and end up not matching again, but because of what you do to it.

Also, do pressure wash the surrounding concrete.  That'll lighten it up significantly

painting or sealing may make it super slippery in a rainstorm

You can do either or. I know my company makes both products.  With that being said I can't recommend it.  On top of agreeing with the posters above me, painting/sealing concrete is a maintenance headache.  They almost always end up in yearly recoats due to peeling/moisture issues.

I can't completely agree with whether or not it is a bad idea to seal/paint concrete. I live in Southwest Florida where we have lots of water. A masonry surface is by nature porous. When things around here remain wet long enough they stain and your end with mold and mildew. It is fairly easy to remove this (at least on flat surfaces where you can't hurt anything) with a power washer. Using bleach or chlorine can help a lot as well. Dealing with this however is (at least) an annual chore. By painting or sealing with the proper products you can reduce the porousness of the surfaces and reduce/eliminate the need to clean the stains and mold/mildew. I am attaching a couple of pics to illustrate. The masonry wall was treated (basically painted) about a year ago one one side (haven't gotten around to the other side quite yet - its on my list of things to do :-) )with a product called Drylock (it comes in different colors). Prior to this both sides looked the same. There is also pics of the pavers around my pool. You can see the line where I have gotten to with the power washing. This is a period chore that I hope I am doing for the last time. I am sealing the pavers this time after cleaning. I have done a corner so far and you can see that the surface looks a bit glossier. It is also smoother to the touch. Hopefully the water will bead up and not soak in. It may not make sense to do this everywhere but I can tell you that so far based on by experience it makes sense in SW Florida. One key is to use the correct product however. You want something that will repel the water and not allow it to soak in. House paint won't do that.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
