Shredded paper for allotment?
« on: February 11, 2015, 12:49:21 AM »
My workplace deals with a ton of confidential paperwork that has to be shredded, so it ends up with a bin bag or two every week. I've been wondering about asking to take some for my allotment. However, I don't want to take it just to compost it - I live in a flat so couldn't at home, and I've filled up my composting zone at the allotment already with weeds. What I was thinking is that I could just dig it straight into the clay soil (which apparently floods sometimes) to help with drainage , as an alternative to sand. Is this a crazy idea?

Paper really doesn't decay all that easily.

Look up the lasagna method of gardening - this usually incorporates paper or cardboard. If it has been shredded it doesn't compact as much, and if you add manure it will decay much more quickly (it is really the carbon part of the compost heap, so you will need a lot of the other parts.

Sure it does, if you've got it paired with greens, it composts nicely.

I shred all of my non shiny paper and put it into the compost bin. The ratio of greens to carbon is something lime 45:1, without looking it up.
Sure bury it in a trench.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
