I have a cat whose purpose in life appears to be converting cat food into hairballs. She's a beautiful, cuddly, tolerant-to-the-children, long-hair who has been with my wife since before we started dating.
We just bought a new couch. Not our most mustachian of purchases, but we hope to enjoy it for decades to come. As expected, the hairball-every-week cat loves the new couch. I suspect you all can see where these things might not be an ideal mix.
So my thought is to make hairball-proof slip covers that can be easily washed when the inevitable happens. I've made a pattern and tested it and I think it will work nicely. What I need help with is fabric.
Does anyone have any thoughts on a fabric that is (or can be made with Scotch guard or some other available coating) hairball proof? And, if so, any ideas on where I can buy a 12-15 yards of it cheaply? My first thought is a microfiber cloth with Scotch guard, but I don't have nearly enough experience to know if that's a wise thought or a... less wise thought. I'm hoping that some of you do.
Here's what I think I need:
- Liquid resistant. The cat will absolutely have hairballs on these, and they will come alongside some food and some stomach acid.
- Washable. I suspect we would throw out the slip cover before we'd ever get it dry cleaned.
- Somewhat comfortable. My family will sit on the slip covers, but we will remove them when entertaining.
I appreciate any wisdom you all may have.

Fleece. I have two cats and have slipcovered my living room furniture with it. They love cuddling up on it and it washes like a dream. I paid $5 per yard for the fabric on sale.
