Salvaging an old rain jacket?
« on: June 21, 2022, 05:40:32 AM »
I helped a friend organize a big garage sale, and one of the things I got in the deal was an old rain jacket. The lining is pretty badly torn in several places, but the shell is in great shape. I'm looking for ideas to repair it, wondering whether there's a good way to fix up the lining or if I should just toss the lining altogether to save weight (it's not glued down or anything, I could just cut it close to the seams) and treat what's left with a water repellent.

You might consider looking into L.L. Beans warranty, for pre-2018 sales it was lifetime materials and satisfaction. Now it is 1 year satisfaction and case-by-case materials after one year.

My experience is the post-2018 warranty still functions as lifetime, but gives them an out is they suspect abuse.

I would just rip out the lining and call it a day. I wouldn't treat the outside and just use the shell as a wind jacket. The stuff used to treat it is extremely smelly and at least it my past experience many years ago, had a tendency to run which made it look unsightly. I can't imagine doing the entire outside of the rain coat and coming away with something that I would wear outside and looked aesthetically pleasing.

Hmm, might be tough without proof of purchase. I don't expect flexibility from modern companies.

Up until things sold in 2018 L.L. Bean was pretty lax on their policy. In part the change to one year with discretion was due to people picking up Bean stuff 2nd or 3rd hand and returning it because "they were not satisfied".

I will admit my experience may be different since I live within driving distance of their flagship store.

Otherwise I would remove the rest of the liner and call it a day.

You could try Flex Seal Tape.  At about $20 a roll, it might be worth more than the cost of the jacket though.

if you have extra material somewhat similar to the lining, such as from a dead umbrella, that lining looks like you could hand sew patches onto it to save it if the company won't repair it for you.

Quality white gaffers/duct tape is what I would do.

I've patched and repaired an awful lot of outdoors wear . . . in my experience, plasticy stuff like that lining looks like doesn't usually take repairs very well.  You could try some tuck tape, but usually when it starts disintegrating like that it's only a matter of time before it's all gone.  I'd just rip out the liner and use the shell as a windbreaker.  The shell looks like a normal fabric which should hold up for a good while still.

I would cut the jacket apart and use it for exterior flashing of sheds or garages.

My DH had a lined fleece jacket from Columbia that he’d owned & loved for 20+ years. The zipper pull broke and was lost and we could not find a replacement. IIRC it was made of metal and now they are all plastic. We emailed Columbia to see if they could mail us a new zipper so we could have it replaced. They asked us to mail them the jacket and they ended up sending us a $100 gift card to get a new jacket. This was far above & beyond what we expected.

It might be worth contacting L.L. Bean to see if they will repair it. Perhaps they’ll simply replace it with a new one instead.
