Rolling dishwashing station
« on: September 29, 2014, 07:56:32 AM »
Hi Everyone,

My entire life I've had a luxuirous dishwasher. However, we just bought a house with no dishwasher.

I cook every day, and I would like to make it a little easier to do dishes.

Since we only have one medium sized sink, I want to build a "rolling dishwashing station" that will have storage underneath, plus built in slots for tubs. The only thing that is remotely close to the image in my head is this

Edit: A coworker told me what I am looking for is called a rolling kitchen cart, and it can be purchased at IKEA. Turns out you don't really need to be that creative afterall (though I might try to DIY from something anyhow)

Has anyone made something like this? If so, what did you use for the base, and what cautions do you have for me?

I don't think I know anyone who has that.  I do have neighbors who hand-wash, partly because their dishwasher died and they use the space as a drying rack rather than for a new dishwasher.

Is there a logical place to install one?

However, I also have neighbors who have a rolling dishwasher, it attaches to the sink faucet with an adapter and drains into the sink.  Theirs has a kind of cabinet on it, and a fairly nice butcher block top, so it's like a rolling island.  They have a fairly tall table as an island and the dishwasher parks under there when not in use.  So, this kind of thing might work for you as well.

Thinking about your questions, you'll want to make sure the casters are far apart, and that the base is pretty heavy, both for stability.  Other than that, I think something that is easy to clean, to me that means no ornamentation, stainless or solid surfaces, and no unfinished wood, and that can close up for a tidy look.

Good luck!

My bf and I (ok, actually, mostly I) have been hand-washing since we moved into our new place. DW are just not common in apts in our price range in this area. We do have a double sink, though. When doing a large load, I try to pile up dishes next to the sink, use one half-full of warm water+soap for washing, and then one for putting clean dishes to be rinsed/rinsing. Then they go on the drying rack/mat.

However, I think if we had bought the place, we would have eventually found the ~$500 worth it for a dishwasher. Not worth it if we're not sure we'll be here >2 years.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
