How to install an eyebolt in a corner
« on: October 24, 2023, 09:16:13 AM »
I'm attempting to hang a shelf in a corner. The shelf is a free-floating wood platform shaped like a quarter-circle that hangs from knotted ropes. I'd like to screw an eyebolt into the wall just below the ceiling, and then attach the ropes to that.

I drilled a starter hole that should be the right size and started the eyebolt by hand. I got it to the point where I can't turn it by hand any more.

Now I'm stuck. How do I screw it the rest of the way into the wall?

I know the usual way to do this is to put a screwdriver through the eye of the eyebolt and use that as a lever to turn it. I can't do that here, because the ceiling is in the way. I don't have enough space to insert the screwdriver through the eyebolt at an angle that gives me leverage.

Anyone have any ideas? Is there a standard way to do this I can't figure out?

Use another eye-bolt chucked into a drill.  Modify/bend the eye-bolt in the drill such that you can get it inserted into the wall eye-bolt.  Run the drill, using an eye-bolt as a bit to turn an eye-bolt.

Thanks for the suggestion! I was ready to try that next, but I figured out how to do it by hand.

Instead of a screwdriver, I used my thickest Allen wrench. The bend in the shaft made it just possible to fit it through the eye without bumping against the ceiling. It gave me enough leverage to turn the eyebolt until it was screwed in all the way.

Grab the end with a pair of wide pliers, like lineman's pliers.
