resetting an alcohol thermometer
« on: August 14, 2013, 04:38:07 AM »
I have a thermometer for my pool (came with the house).  The alcohol is all at the top.  So far to reset it I have tried: shaking it , freezing it in an upright position, putting it into really hot water (flat).  Googling didn't find any other ideas.

Suggestions? Apart from buying a replacement thermometer - I know I can do that  ;-)

This pretty well covers all the major methods: http://www.novalynx.com/reference-rejoining.html

Freezing doesn't work, because it does nothing to address the air pockets and only makes the alcohol more viscous.

Tapping with enough caution and patience is usually one of the best methods, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Remember that we're ultimately talking about a sub $5 part.

Nothing worked.  Guess I am stuck buying a new one  :-(   I hate buying replacements when it seems I "should" be able to fix/repair something, but in this case the alcohol is truly in the wrong place forever.  At least it wasn't mercury.
