Replacing/expanding a basketball court
« on: March 14, 2018, 08:36:26 PM »
Hey mustachios!

We moved into a new home last year and it has a small basketball court on the side of the property. I enjoy a good game of basketball, and would like to improve the court as it's currently a bit small and the hoop has seen better days (wintery image attached).

It is currently asphalt, and although a little warn, the condition is fine for playing on.  However, I'd like to extend the court by probably about two feet in every direction and also put in a new hoop. I'm curious how other people would approach this project. I'm not really comfortable installing asphalt myself, would you hire a driveway asphalt company to just lay two feet on asphalt around the existing court, or have them completely rip it up and start over?  Or would you replace it with something like concrete?  I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to this stuff so would appreciate any advice or wisdom you can throw at me!

Instead of asphalt or concrete, you could rip it out and go with something like this:

Probably what I would do if I was building a standalone court.
I'm guessing there is some significant prep work to get the ground leveled prior to putting this in though?

Also, depending on how nice of a goal you are wanting, the best prices tend to be on Black Friday. They probably go on sale a few other times a year as well, but Dick's always has a great sale on Black Friday. My friend got the Goalrilla (very unmustachian, but has zero sway if that's what you are looking for) for almost 50% off a few years ago, and I know it was that price again last November.

If you try to expand it with asphalt, you are going to have a seam where new meets old that will never be quite right.
I'd probably just peel out what is there and go all new to the size you want.   Would recommend concrete rather than asphalt so your ball and hands don't get black.
Colored concrete would look real nice.

My first reaction is that you must mean digging up the post and moving it 2 ft or 2 yards forward, away from the big tree at center court. Then I saw the shadow and assume the court must be close to the house, so you are only considering expanding the width?

As you are thinking I would keep it very low budget, attempting to mix/level some asphalt mixture to keep it as level and seamless as possible. But if there is some seam it will not be that bad. If you were moving the goal post I might be tempted to pour concrete at the new baseline but I think that would be overkill and not fitting your court.

I say all this without having any experience with pouring asphalt.  I only had a too small concrete pad to play basketball on as a kid, where we just extended it with dirt and dealt with the uneven court surface. It was called home-court-advantage. :-)
