Replacing outdoor stairs
« on: May 13, 2013, 11:55:25 AM »
We have some wooden stairs (6 steps plus a landing and railing) leading up to a side door that needs replacing.  We use these steps a lot.  Is there a DIY kit or something we could use to replace them?  We are not especially handy people and would need something easy to install.

Thanks.

you could go this route, still a bit cheaper than a pro:

or, you could go this route:

building stairs is, as a buddy of mine put it "where you separate the carpenters from the rest". There's nothing overly difficult if you can work a saw and a framing square, and follow the stringer directions, you can do it yourself. that doesn't mean you should. stairs are something that is either right, or hazardous. for a pro, fairly quick to build, for others, not so much.

i could hire a pro, and he could knock out stairs much faster than i, but i really LIKE building rock solid stairs, even though it takes me way too long.

You'll have to decide for yourself how much your time and the experience are worth to you.

If you are close to a big box store like Home Depot or Lowes see if they have these: http://www.homedepot.ca/product/treated-wood-5-step-stringer/941800.

Check the rise and run to make sure they'll fit your application.
