Title: Replace front door or paint exterior first?
Post by: Mrs Brightside on January 31, 2023, 08:28:43 AM
I’m planning to get rid of my screen door and replace my front door. The front door will not be painted after leaving the factory. I also plan to repaint the exterior of my house. Should I replace the front door first or paint the house first?

I don't know that it functionally matters. You want to get the door painted pretty quickly so its protected from the elements. In installing the door you may have to remove/replace trim, which would then need to be painted, but it's not really a big deal to touch up the siding as needed. If you do all of it at the same time, I would paint the siding first, then the trim and door. But that's assuming it's all happening within a week or so.

I would paint and replace the front door first because that is going to involve removing and putting trim back on both the inside and outside of the house most likely. This will prevent you from having to go back and retouch up areas that the trim doesn't cover. Not a big deal but I like saving time and a clean up and put everything away again cycle if possible.

If it's a pre hung door then I would do the door first, if not then it's fine to paint first.

I would do the door first. When I've replaced exterior doors it has involved pulling off trim and sometimes siding to get at the nailing flange and to install flashing/flashing tape. I think it would look better to get that all done and then paint, rather than trying to touch up afterwards.

Does the door come pre-finished/painted from the factory?

I'd paint the house first to avoid any issues with getting the house color onto the new door.
