Title: Rental needs windows - can I fit smaller standard-size windows to save money?
Post by: Milspecstache on May 14, 2017, 04:33:22 PM
My recently purchased duplex (thank you MMM!) has 2 broken windows.  Both are 34.5" wide which is a non-standard size.  I have found a window that fits one opening at Home Depot but the other window (and potentially the first once I pull it and see the true size) is a special order.

My plan for the second is to purchase a standard 32.5" wide window and shim 1" on each side with pressure-treated or, even better, with the plastic wood now available.  This will enable me to use a cheaper window (also reducing replacement costs in the future).

To finish I'll need to clad it on the outside with aluminum but I have friends with brakes so that shouldn't be too difficult.  May have to do something on the inside as well but with wood.

Any opinions?  I've only done new construction windows previously so this is a different route for me...

Totally doable, especially since you have figured out the trim and finishing inside and out.

But why not wait for something that fits? Is it more expensive for the actual window size?  I buy my windows from alside, and they are all made to order and when I have priced them out, they are cheaper than HD or Lowe's.  Go find a new window supplier.

Alside does not sell retail, only to customers with an account, think larger volume/contractors, etc.  you may want to start making these connections if you continue to buy properties.

Probably would not cost much more to purchase some properly sized, new vinyl replacement windows.
I've been buying them for about $400 apiece installed, bet they're only about $200 material only?
