Removing security bars from brick house
« on: February 06, 2013, 01:00:01 PM »
My husband and I recently bought a house that we will be spending the next 12 months renovating. There are security bars on all the windows and doors. They are pretty old, probably installed i the 70's or 80's. What is the best way to remove them that will result in the least amount of damage to the bricks? The points that secure them to the house is obviously not screw or bolt heads. Any ideas will be helpful before we start ripping into it. Thanks!

Are they inserted into wide diameter holes in the face of the bricks?  If so, I'd first try cutting a middle section out of a test bar with a sawzall (or any reciprocating saw), then pulling/wiggling each end out of the masonry.  If that works, a little tuckpointing should clean things up nicely.

They are inserted to the face of the brick. There is a fancy washer/flange thing between the bars and the brick so it's hard to tell anything else. That's a good idea; some bars a pretty rusted so hopefully that will make wiggling them out easier.! Thanks a bunch. :)
