Removing emblem from vehicle
« on: July 02, 2015, 07:58:58 AM »
When I bought my funky xD back in September, it came with a Jesus fish on it. I've grown tired of looking at it. Has anyone else removed one of these before? How did you do it so as to not mess up the paint/clear coat?

If it's just on there with adhesive, I've heard people use dental floss.  With some pressure and a sawing motion it should separate the adhesive relatively cleanly.

Hair dryer to soften the glue, then peel off. Goo gone will safely remove any residual adhesive.

Don't use a heat gun in place of the hair dryer, unless you feel lucky...

Or -- depending on where you live -- just park the vehicle in direct sunlight for an hour. Floss or fishing line behind the emblem and saw back/forth to cut through the adhesive. Or just pry it off with a plastic tool and remove the adhesive by hand. Goo Gone/WD40 will remove excess adhesive.

The baby Jesus weeps when one of his flock pries a Jesus fish off a car. It is God's will that it was put there is the first place......................just kidding.   How about taking a magic marker and upgrading it to an evolution fish, with legs and feet?

FYI after flossing and using goo gone, you may still have a "ghost" image of the emblem, but that should fade in a couple days.

Success! I keep dental floss at work so I parked facing east during lunch and sliced that sucker right off. Unfortunately the material that held it on there is still good and stuck, so I'll be using that Goo Gone when I get home. Thanks y'all!

I've used lighter fluid as well.  But test it on a less visible spot (no matter what you use) before you commit.

If you get a ghost of the image... start with regular car wax.  If that doesn't work, move up to polishing compound.  If that doesn't work, go to rubbing compound.   If you end up using one of the more aggressive compounds, you'll have to then go over it with the less aggressive.  In other words, if you use rubbing compound, you'll then have to follow with polishing compound and then wax.

I second the hair drier method. Let it warm up the glue a minute or two.

Worked for me to take off the 3rd rate sticker from the 3rd rate used car lot that I bought my car from.

As others have said you should try this on a hidden part of your vehicle, but acetone (nail polish remover) should take off the glue

Be careful of acetone!  That's designed to remove paint (i.e. nail polish).

I remember my older sister's first car.  She was so proud of it.  She had stacked a bunch of stuff on the roof while she took stuff out of the back seat.  She slammed the door and her nail polish remover landed on it's side.  Glug.  Glug.  Glug.   And when she set it upright, there was a huge paintless spot on the passenger side of the car.

I've never used GooGone, but if it doesn't work, WD-40 (or a knock off) probably will.

Naptha, from your hardware store, will remove the residue.  It works for most glues, including from the price stickers stores put on your new stuff.  Don't use acetone; it will remove the paint.  GooGone also works with enough elbow grease.
