Refinishing Wood Windows Questions
« on: March 15, 2017, 08:59:37 AM »
I'm looking for some information on how to refinish exterior wood windows. The windows aren't original to the house, but they clearly haven't been refinished in a while. I just bought the house this year so I don't know much about them. I talked to a guy at the hardware store who suggested I just paint them, but I would rather have them be stained and sealed.

Since these are exterior windows that get a good amount of afternoon sun should I be getting a UV protective stain or does it not matter if I'm going to lacquer over the stain anyway?

I have to take the windows out and put them back in at night everyday I do the work. Is this going to be a problem with the time it takes to stain or lacquer the windows?

I only had to stain the inside parts of our windows, and I used a combination stain/sealant from Minwax. It says drying time is six hours, but I remember it being dry to the touch within an hour or so.

As far as I know it's good for outdoor use too.

In ten years, it hasn't faded at all. The glass is treated to prevent UV fade, so I'm not sure how much gets through, but the windows get direct sunlight most of the day.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
