Radiant Barrier
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:08:29 AM »
I just ordered some radiant barrier material for my attic which should arrive sometime in the next week. Since we're in the south and have dark shingles on our roof, I'm expecting to get a significant return on investment with reduced electrical bills. I also intend to check the attic for air gaps (recessed lighting, fans, ducts etc.) during the installation. I had intended to use a remote temperature sensor in the attic to gather before and after temperatures, but I haven't installed it yet, and with the temperature rising and the electrical costs piling up I probably won't have more than a few days worth of 'before' data.

I'll post how the installation goes, but I'm interested to hear if anyone else has installed a radiant barrier and how it worked for you.

I'm not sure how it will pan out for your electric bills, but it results in a noticeably cooler attic. Probably close to a ten degrees difference. However, we've only noticed a very modest savings on our electric bill.  Luckily, the radiant barrier was only $200 and resulted in a tax deduction.

I'm not expecting miracles, but I figure it's a good way to lower our cooling costs for the life of the house.  I ordered 3000 square feet of radiant barrier for about $400, and I'll definitely be deducting it from my taxes.

The first test will be in the FROG (finished room over garage), which is the only room not on the first floor. Hopefully wrapping those walls in the radiant barrier will bring the temperature down in that room, because it typically runs five or more degrees hotter than the rest of the house.
