Plumbing help. Pipe diameter change.
« on: September 30, 2016, 06:19:11 PM »
Hello handy mustachians,
I am installing a water softener. The copper line in my house is 1" diameter but the bypass valve on the softener has 3/4" connections. Is it a big deal if I reduce down the diameter to connect into the softener and then expand it when I connect back to the water line? Should I just suck it up and get a new 1" bypass?

Thanks!

Not a big deal. 3/4" copper pipe can still flow > 8 gpm "safely" (without excessive wear to the pipe and with low pressure loss).

3/4" schedule 40 PVC is much more restrictive, but still not an issue over a few feet of pipe for household, non-irrigation use. (I'm assuming you're not softening the water for outdoor irrigation... ;) )

Nothing wrong with it. 1'' is over sized to begin with.
