How can I mount my TV?
« on: December 22, 2014, 08:17:26 AM »
I purchased a home this month and it looks as though the past owners mounted their tv to the wall (there are 4 holes in the shape of a rectangle.  I cannot be sure the studs are behind those holes, but I assume they are there and will check.  Once I confirm those are the studs, is there anything else I should be worried about when mounting a tv myself?  If I need to hire someone, let me know.

It is my understanding that I have some bracket/mounting object that I crew into the studs in the wall, and then when it's in place, I attack my tv (or latch it, or something like that) to the mounting object.    Do I have that right?

any helpful posts will be appreciated.

I mounted my tv on the wall by myself.  It was easy.  I ordered a mount from Amazon (around $40).  It comes in two parts - one part screws into the studs like you say and one part screws into the tv.  Then you lift the tv above the mount and it hangs on the top rail.  I was very nervous the first time but it worked out great.  Depending on the size of your tv you might need an extra set of hands.

The wires (for me) just hang down.  If you want to get fancy, you can snake the wires behind the walls.

That sounds exactly like what my dad did when he mounted mine onto the wall for me. Also, the mounting kits come with very clear instructions with pictures. We paid $35 for our kit. Just make sure you get the correct one for your TV size - we had a lot of trouble finding one for ours since we have a 24 inch TV and they seem to start at about 27 inches and up.

Does with those 4 holes come an outlet or some sort of conduit through the wall?

Check out monoprice.com as well for cables and mounts on the cheap, I bought a really flush mount one for my TV for like 25$, solid build construction for it to.  Is definitely a 1 person job unless you get a flush mount that is really close to the wall.  Then it really helps having a second set of hands to attach all the cables and dress them behind the tv.

If you start to explore putting cables into the wall instead, DO NOT run TV power cords in the wall, this is against electrical code and can cause a fire.  You will need a powerline adapter or run an outlet.  All other TV cables do not carry that kind of voltage and can safely just be strung through the wall.

When I first moved into my house, I hired someone to mount a TV in the living room and rub the cables through the wall. I wished I had watched YouTube first. It is super easy (this coming from an apartment dwelling do nothing like me)

I went ahead and bought a kit myself to do the TV in the bedroom. Ran the wires in the wall and got it mounted by myself in an afternoon. Saved a ton.

it's very easy.

You just screw the mount in to the wooden frame of the house, and then attach the TV to the mount.

Before you attach the TV, put ~40kg of bodyweight on the mount to check that it will not fall.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
