Oven won't provide heat - what's the problem?
« on: October 03, 2019, 10:59:35 AM »
When I turn my oven on, the element light stays on briefly, then turns off. Neither the elements nor oven provide heat. The oven light is turned on. I've turned the breaker on/off and tried unplugging/plugging the oven, neither has worked. Any ideas on what I can try? It's a frigidaire as pictured:

First a disclaimer: I haven’t fixed an oven before, so my suggestions are purely based off general troubleshooting skills.

Have you tried plugging it into a different outlet? I would try that first, in case there’s some issue with the voltage it’s getting that is somehow flipping a safety limit switch.

Next I’d try all the oven settings and identify if your problem is with all the heating elements or just the bake one as opposed to the broiler. Are you also saying that the stove top spots also aren’t heating up? When was the last time everything worked?

Could be a damaged heating element, among other things.

I've used this site --- https://www.appliancepartspros.com/ --- to price out parts and to get help with basic diagnostics for my appliances.  Search by your model number and often they give you help along with a parts list.  Sometimes you have to select a part to get information about what others have found wrong with their stove that might be similar to what you're experiencing.

If you look inside, do both the elements appear to be in good shape (no breaks, no chips)?  My bottom element broke which shut off the stove and I replaced it for about $12 and a bit of time.

If the elements themselves seem fine, have you unplugged the oven and taken off the back to look (possibly under insulation) to see if there are any loose/broken/fused wires?  It'd be worth getting a manual out or off the Internet for your model.  You could see if there is an internal fuse that might have blown.

As with most appliances, my bet is that a sensor went bad. Ovens have over temp sensors to make sure they don't get in a run away temperature situation which might lead to a house fire. When those sensors fail, they are designed to fail so that the control board gets a signal that it has reached max temperature so that is why you are seeing it attempt to heat up but turn off right away. You should be able to locate the sensor and test with a simple volt meter and a wiring schematic to verify it has gone bad.
