Oven knob position always wrong
« on: April 24, 2013, 10:51:31 PM »
I recently moved into a new apartment, and the oven knobs for mode and temperature are off by a full quarter or so (when "Off", the mode knob is pointing between Broil and Off; when in "Warm", the temp knob is pointing to 200°). I pulled the knobs off and the stem looks right and fine - screws attached securely, etc.

Is there anything I can do to fix this without replacing a lot of parts?

Draw a new arrow on the oven that points to the actual temperature? :)

The knobs on my stove have no markings on them whatsoever anymore, they've long since worn away. We used a Sharpie to put new ones on. We also use an oven thermometer because our Sharpie is not so accurate;)

Mine's been like that since I bought it secondhand seven or eight years ago.

A bit of a stove geek here...

sooo.... this really depends on your oven.  Mine was made in 1951.... and it totally has a fix for this.  If you pull off the knob, there may very well be an adjustment beneath.  Caveat: this may or may not apply to you!

On mine, under the main knob, there is an adjustment.  Under my main knob is a secondary readout (calibrated with temperatures).  The secondary knob has locking screws.  You can loosen them and twist it.

In my situation, you put a thermometer in the oven, set it at say... 350 degrees and let it come up to speed.  Once it has settled down (flame or element goes off) check the thermometer.  If it says 300, loosen the screws and set the secondary readout to 300.  Tighten it down.

You might have to repeat a couple of times to fine tune.

Put the knob back on and ... done.
