Shielding vinyl siding from the heat of a gas grill
« on: August 08, 2017, 09:22:53 AM »
Looking for ideas/suggestions to fix a smallish home problem ...

The most logical place for our gas grill (a mid-sized three-burner grill on which we cook a couple of times per week) happens to be alongside an exterior wall clad in vinyl siding. While we've been pretty careful so far this season to keep the grill a reasonable distance from the siding, it's starting to show signs of heat damage (some warping over roughly 2' x 2' section even with the grill body & lid). It's not world-ending right now, but I don't want it to get worse.

I'm thinking of trying to construct some sort of heat shield to put between the grill and the siding, but I'm not sure what materials to use. We have one of these (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Infinite-Heat-Solutions-Deck-Protect-36-in-x-36-in-Fire-Pit-Chiminea-Deck-Protector-4002/205728840) for our firepit and my first instinct was to mount something like this at grill-height, but they're expensive and I wonder if there's a cheaper or easier solution.

(And yes, I know that we could just move the dang grill and solve the problem, but other spots we could put it are less logical for a bunch of unexciting reasons.)

Eh?

Get a sheet of the material they put behind wood stoves.
Can probably find at any fireplace shop.

Per; http://www.motherearthnews.com/renewable-energy/wood-stove-installation-zmaz81jfzraw

You want/need Insulation Board Heat Shield, sold as 4' by 10'  foil-covered fiberglass duct board
Can be found at your local heating supply store.

Can you just move it temporarily while you cook and move it back to its rightful spot for storage? Even just moving it at a 90 degree angle from where it is now will make a huge difference.

I was just going to say something similar...and rather "Captain Obvious"-like.

No need to make it more complicated than it needs to be. Move the grill.

Yep, it's moved for the moment, as that's obviously the simplest solution.

Long-term, though, I'd like to be able to cook on it in the spot near the wall -- that makes the (relatively small) outdoor dining space quite a bit more hangout-friendly. So I'll be investigating heat shield options -- thanks for the suggestions!
