My DIY front rail and Brick Stairs.
« on: October 14, 2023, 12:08:44 PM »
Hi,
I have just moved into a house in Chesterfield VA.
There is a front entryway. It has 3 steps and is made of all red bricks.
The cement needs re-pointing.
Worst of all, the Steel Railings have rusted completely through at the bottom.
I found these cool extenders: Just google "Banisters Repair foot".

---
One problem I am having is that the one support brick at the bottom is broken and it is NOT a standard size! This is the brick that holds the rail, so I will have to drill holes in it too.

What I have and need:
  • brick measurement from my steps
    7-7/8"x2-7/8"x3-3/8" (inches)
    That is 200x73x86 ( mm)
  • Standard brick 7 ⅝"x2 ¼"x3 ⅝" (This seems to be all that I can find)

Anyway if someone knows where I can locate the correct brick to replace let me know.

I have never mixed up cement or done any kind of masonry before. Thankfully youtube exists and this is an opportunity for me to show my badassity.  :-)
I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes.
Thanks,
Chris

I know very little… but I see salvaged brick all the time. Someone will have your odd sized brick.

You don’t use cement on bricks, you use mortar. It’s very different. YouTube could get you started.  If your house has age to it then you might be looking at different kinds of mortar. It can be important to match mortars as close as you can not just for esthetics but also for the health of the brick.
