Moving shower head bracket in a tiled wall
« on: May 25, 2017, 01:59:25 PM »
The shower head in our new house is at about chin level, so we'd like to move it up. Unfortunately it's attached to a fully tiled wall (large 30cm x 20cm tiles). Am I going to end up drilling through tiles or is there another way? At the moment it seems to be attached in the grout at a T-junction. Can I just fill in the hole that it's going to leave?

Replace with something like this:  http://www.homedepot.com/p/MOEN-4-Spray-4-in-Eco-Performance-Handheld-Handshower-with-Slidebar-in-Chrome-3669EP/204316824

Then all you have to do is mount the slide bar at the desired height range.  The shower connection from the wall can be pretty much anywhere.

I was just going to suggest something essentially the same.

I.e. replace existing (fixed) shower head with a flexible shower hose outlet
and then attach a separate hose-fed shower head from this new shower hose outlet.

The new shower head can then use a vertial shower rail to give you the height flexibility.

Yup.  Handheld shower head.  I never take it out of the holder but it adds about 8-10" of height to my shower.  If you want to make it super easy then just get a handheld shower head that doesn't use a rail.  Unscrew old head and screw this one in and you are pretty much done.  They handle holder pivots so when I get in the shower I angle it way up and when my wife gets in she angles it down.

Ours is like this.

The "S" shaped extension from Home Depot works great. I installed 2 of them at my parents new condo that had the shower enclosures where it was threaded into the wall and I didn't have any problems with them.

This is great, thanks for all the options! It's currently a handheld shower head with a fixed bracket (fixed in a stupid place and very unadjustable) so depending on what we can find separately I'll either do a slider bar or an adjustable arm.

How do fixed brackets usually attach? Because the current one doesn't have any visible screws and I don't know whether to try and remove it or just leave it there (as it's further over to the wall than we want it anyway, so it wouldn't be in the way for the new one).

Look on the bottom side up next to the wall and there will probably be a small hole with a set screw. Loosen the set screw and this will allow you to remove it from the wall. There will be a cleat screwed into the wall that the set screw was pressing against to hold the bracket on. Once you move the cleats, you can reattach the fixed bracket in the new location and fill the old holes.

It's likely just threaded into a fitting in the wall. It should just unscrew and then you use a brush to clean up the threads a bit, get some teflon tape for the new "S" extender and screw it in.
