Mounting a TV and extension arm between two windows?
« on: August 07, 2016, 11:00:25 AM »
Will try to get a pic up but there's roughly about 8" of space between two windows - would this be considered 'load-bearing' to where I could mount one of those retractable extension arms for a 55-65" TV? Or would that definitely be a no-no? The windows are actually right by a corner as well, so maybe mounting an arm from the corner would be a better option?

Here are a couple pictures. I'm thinking about mounting the tv between the two windows pretty much so it's in the same position it is now just off the stand. If not, I suppose I could mount it in either of those corners?

In my house I know that spaces like that have framing in them (and I suspect your how should too) and if you anchor attach to them you will be fine to mount a TV. It may not be solid wood but there is likely a stud next to each window, which will be more than enough to support a TV.

BTW "load bearing" usually means a wall carrying the weight (load) from something above it; as that is an exterior wall it is most certainly load bearing. A TV mount does not have to be placed on a load bearing wall the framing of any wall should be sufficient to support a TV . . .as long as it is attached properly.

I personally would be hesitant to mount a TV directly in front of 2 windows, but that is just personal preference and it just seems odd/an after thought. . . plus if you ever want to move it the drywall work and paint is a PIA.

Personally if I were you and I wanted to have my TV raised in that location, I would look into a stand like you have, but with a mounting post of the TV. As an example here is a link with a picture of what I am talking about http://www.globalsources.com/si/AS/Yuefeng-Hardware/6008827264949/pdtl/Glass-TV-Stand/1046187204.htm

Thanks for the clarification... yea, now that I think about it, it would be weird mounting it right next to the window. I probably won't go through the trouble of doing that. It's actually at a pretty good height right now. I'm not too happy about the entertainment center as I think we prefer one that's more closed off so that our infant can't climb all over it. I'll probably just get a different one that's also a bit higher. We currently have an older 46" LCD so as prices are dropping on 55" and 65" tvs, we may end up with one of those. I think it would be fine on such a stand.

There's probably a stud there, but there might not be room for the whole mounting plate that connects the arm to the wall, which might make it wobbly.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
