Made computer room silent for free!
« on: December 20, 2014, 11:08:28 AM »
I have a relatively loud computer, it still works well, but it was looking like I would need to spend hundreds upgrading it to be a reasonable volume.  I realized that I have a spare room right next to me that shares a wall with my computer desk.  I opened an unused phone line box and used a hole saw to drill through to the other side of the wall.  Now my computer is on the other side of the wall and I can't hear it.  My video cable is through that hole and I have a wireless mouse, keyboard and internet.  So far it seems to be working great and I saved money and came up with a quieter solution than any liquid cooled computer.

Excellent!

If there's still some noise coming through the wall, you might try running some of your fans at a lower voltage to reduce noise further. I have all of mine running at either 5v or 7v, which can be done by connecting the positive lead from the fan to your power supply's +12, and the negative to the +5v.

I think once I seal up the hole that shouldn't be an issue, there are two layers of OSB and two layers of drywall between me and the computer.  We have a prefab home so there's two layers where the two halves meet for when they transported it.
