Keeping HVAC condensate drain clean
« on: July 05, 2022, 04:06:14 PM »
The youtube videos out there on keeping condensate drain lines clean seem to all mention pouring bleach/vinegar down the PVC drain to kill whatever is growing.

However, almost every time I have to crawl in the attic to un-clog the drain, the clog seems to be inside the air handler itself (upstream of the t-fitting where I'd pour bleach). I end up getting it un-clogged with one of those barbed plastic strips meant for cleaning a sink drain.

Is there anything I can do to prevent that? I'm leery of spraying compressed air or anything similar into that drain port, since in my mind it would end up blasting whatever gunk is in there all over the inside of the unit and make a big mess.

The next time a neighbor throws away an old vaccum, pick it up. Use the vaccum's hose to suck from the vent line. As long as it has enough suction, it will capture the slimy clog. You can also do this from outside if it's more convenient than the indoor vent tube.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
