Jamis bike seat switch?
« on: March 16, 2014, 05:46:35 PM »
Hi all,

I'm looking to switch the seat out on my Jamis bike. I can't seem to find the right tool for the bolt--all of the hex bits I try are either way too small or way too large. The key that came with the bike fits the handlebar shaft.

Does anyone know what tool I need to get the seat off of the post? All my googling tells me is that it's an "integrated" style seat.

The bike is a Jamis Coda sport. I've done nothing to the body of it.

If you're using Imperial / US customary wrenches, switch to metric (probably this)
If you're using metric, switch to Imperial / US customary (probably not this, unless the bike is hella old)

I would also guess its metric and you're trying to use imperial. Probably needs a 6mm wrench. If you only have a 7/32 and 1/4 you'll find quite a lot of slop in the 7/32"(~5.56mm) and the 1/4"(~6.35mm) just won't fit.

You need a 5 or 6mm Allen Key-it is most definitely not integrated. It's a very simple procedure-you just need the right tools.

A set of decent allen keys runs you about 5-10$ at home depot.  It's probably worth getting both metric and imperial if you don't already have them.

If it's the dreaded 7mm allen, those don't come in hex sets. You'll need to get a brake caliper socket if that's the case.

You guys rock. I can't believe I hadn't thought of this yet. Thanks! I checked both my bit sets and they are Imperial (and the current allen key set doesn't have it--too small). Time to get a metric set of tools. I'll update once I've confirmed the issue.

I think most of the bicycle multi-tools will have metric hex wrenches on them.

This is a good point.  The bike multi-tool I carry has a couple sizes of screw driver, all of the hex wrenches I've ever needed, and a spoke wrench.  Surprisingly handy tool to carry around for about 15$.

Yep, it was metric. Easy fix when you have the right tools. :)

Thanks!
