Iron bacteria in well water
« on: April 25, 2024, 06:32:06 PM »
It's pretty obvious that we have iron bacteria in our well water. We have a water softener, but before we had it installed, and a few weeks ago when it was accidentally unplugged, our water was foul-smelling and stained our toilets, plates, etc. I've fixed the stains with Iron Out, and the softener is keeping the iron bacteria at bay, but now that I've read up on it more, that seems more like a Band-Aid than a solution to the problem. (And salt for the softener has only been increasing in price.)

Rather than call a well company and spend $1000s, is there a simple DIY solution? I've read that some people just toss a gallon of bleach into their well and then run the water until it doesn't smell like bleach anymore (a couple of times a year). Does that actually work? Is there a better idea?

The MN dept of health has good information on this. And I'd rust them to be the experts on iron in well water (lots of iron there). They have good instructions on DIY chlorination as well.  https://www.health.state.mn.us/communities/environment/water/wells/waterquality/ironbacteria.html

Is there a local lab you can call to get your water tested?

I would get your water tested to confirm what is in your water.  If you are on a well you should be testing annually.

If the test confirms iron bacteria, I would get a quote from a well company.  It may not be as expensive as you think if all they do is poor a lot of bleach down the well.  They may have suggestions for replacing the iron parts of your well which could be the only permanent solution.

Pouring bleach into the well and then running your faucets before using for drinking would help.

I had iron bacteria for 15 years and just ignored it.  We used a Berkey filter for drinking.  Yeah, there are stains but they always cleaned up easily.

This link has high quality information follow its advice for high quality H2O.

Always try to stop bacteria from being in the water rather than treat it. At worst bacteria will kill you, at best it lets you know when something bad for you can get inhour drinking water.

Since this thread got bumped, I found this typo to be particularly amusing.

Ah, so it wasn't on purpose? The perfect typo.
