UPDATE! ideas for broken fridge door handle?
« Reply #1 on: August 20, 2016, 01:56:18 PM »
Update!
I had phoned around for used parts and to places that fix appliances.  I decided to call Lowe's even though the warranty was only one year and it had been 2 years since I bought it.  They pawned me off to Fridgidare and so I called them - they said they'd send me a new one because it was less than 2 years!!! SCORE!  😃
Once again proving MMM right; that's it worth it to make the phone calls...

Good idea sd!

Spartana I hope you get a freebe too!  Mine is in a kinda high end rental so I don't think posting a sign will do.  If it was my place, for sure.  😊

It looks like your problem is already solved, but if a similar situation arises you might try E6000 glue (available on Amazon, Walmart, craft stores, etc.) This stuff is amazing and it's more likely that your handle will break in a new place than the glue will come unstuck.

Lowe's sent me to Fridgidare  ( Electrolux ) .  Their # is 1 866 386 5486 or in Canada 1 800 265 8352.
Good luck!

Thanks Julie!

We've been without a fridge handle for at least 3 years now. We open it from the top of the door (my daughter used to have to use the bottom but she's tall enough to reach the top now). I'm so used to it when I go to someone else's house I open their's from the top now too.

This may seem silly, but almost every time I've ever seen a broken fridge door it was because somebody spilled something, that something then got on the fridge door seal and became really sticky.  Then you need to yank harder to open the fridge door until the handle breaks.  If you regularly clean the door seal it should be pretty difficult to break the handle.

That's good to know GuitarStv;  I'll make sure it's cleaned well between tenants.  This is the first time I've ever had a broken handle.  I think it's also due to a poor design - Spartana 's broke in the exact same place and our fridges are not that old.  Mine was bought new < 2 years ago (pre MMM - although I did get the dented model for a $200 discount, lol).

My handle broke in the same exact spot randomly a few weeks back. The plastic used on this fridge is garbage. Both the drawers cracked in half and one of the door plastic thingys broke in half too. I think its less than two years old too so maybe I can get it replaced. Hmm.... It might be tough though since I don't have a receipt or anything (I'm the renter). Thanks for the reminder!

They didn't actually ask for a receit number, just the serial number - which is in the fridge - to check the age.

Mine broke because I pulled it out of its cubby by the handles. Not my smartest idea.

HAHAHA!  So true!  Especially when it comes to MMM stuff.
My worst infraction was when I sold my daughter's bed the week BEFORE she left for Uni!  Hey, I didn't think it would sell that fast when I posted it...
Anyway, it all worked out - been FIREd 6 months now and LOVIN it!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
