I did it! Oven burner element replaced
« on: October 11, 2015, 01:10:49 PM »
Our oven burner element burned out. Inspired by you all I thought this was a good DIY to tackle.

Diagnosed, went online to price replacement. All set to do it.

Then did not think about turning off the power before removing the screws holding the element in place. So got them out, pulled on the element and 'spark' - no power to whole stove. Hmm, I thought I fried something.

So, I started chickening out of this DIY adventure, thinking I had already done more damage that I may not be able to fix. I called an appliance repair place to get some pricing - yow! The person on the phone did advise that my sparking incident may have just tripped the circuit. I checked and that was the case.

I decided to go for it! Mission accomplished!

Estimated cost for professional repair:
$63 service fee + $45 burner element + labor = greater than $108

DIY cost:
$20 burner element + $6 shipping = $26 - took about 5 minutes to fix.
More than $82 saved!

CAVEAT: I think both sides are properly connected, but I do have some lose of feeling in my fingertips - so there is a little remaining paranoia (what if either side is not fully connected? Fire?)

Good job.  I hope you unplug the stove next time though.

Yep, lesson learned. I am lucky that it didn't fry some electrical/control board.

Not sure that I am ready to put in a new garbage disposal yet! If the size is standard and all the connections line up, it sounds like an easy swap, but I've read where others had to plumb some connections, in a tight space, while laying on the floor.....

One thing you have to be careful about is that many of the replacement burners you find on eBay, Amazon, etc. are lower wattage (higher element resistance) than the original burner.  You need to make sure that you are really getting a replacement burner that is the same specs.   I had to return two burners once before getting a valid replacement.  Luckily, they paid for shipping.

Ideally when replacing a "wear" component, I try to replace with something above OEM spec.   I can't stand all the chinese crap floating around.

I found the element on RepairClinic, I wouldn't have thought of searching eBay.

I didn't think to check the specs, and am not sure I know where to find the specs for the original. I assume this was the original burner, though the stove came with the house.
