Recommend replacement bicycle tires off Amazon
« on: May 22, 2017, 03:10:09 PM »
Had a blow out on my rear bicycle tire. Mountain bike tire that came with it is worn through to the thread in places so I need to get a new tire and tube. The bike is a hardtail mountain bike that I ride on pavement 99% of the time. Current tire is a 26"x2.1". What is a decent tire and tube on Amazon that won't break the bank and is appropriate for on-road riding? For the tire I was thinking about the following:

Any good? On the tube I am completely lost. Thanks.

I love to take my kids biking and we generally run about a 20 mile roundtrip.  Doing this I got so sick of flat tires that I went with the solid tires that are airless.  A complete pain in the rear to install but will never need changing.  Slightly harder to spin but again, worth it to avoid the pain of changing tubes during the ride.

tube is $18 for 26x1.75

If you read the comments they will tell you what size tire to run over the tubes.  Again, you will hate me during the install...  I watched the YouTube videos and eventually followed them to put a screwdriver through the valve hole to start.

That tire  will be fine. You can go with the suggested tube:
https://www.amazon.com/Bell-STANDARD-Tube-26-1-75-2-25/dp/B000AAYBHI/ref=pd_sim_468_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000AAYBHI&pd_rd_r=ZW5AG42F029C7YS2S506&pd_rd_w=qqcKI&pd_rd_wg=8GZ1s&psc=1&refRID=ZW5AG42F029C7YS2S506

or a different brand. Just make sure it is 26" and the width is in the 1.75-2.25 range.

There are many different makes and models of tire and tube at all price points. Some are super lightweight, some are thorn-resistant, some are designed for certain types of terrain, etc., etc. There's no upper limit to what you can spend. But you don't have to spend a fortune to get a perfectly decent tire and tube.

I recommend you get a spare tube (if you don't have one already).

I think that tire would be OK, but I like something slicker if I'm riding mostly on road.  I use this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0028NA8OU/

No thanks on the solid "tubes".

They would add a lot of weight, give a harsh ride, and my bike uses the tiny racing 23-25mm wide tubulars  / sew ups.

You mentioned that the tire was worn out, not that it got punctured. Just get a similar style tire in the same size and a tube to fit it.

Thanks for the info guys. I ended up getting a $17 tire and $4 tube off Amazon. One that is more of a road tire than a off road tire. Seems to be working fine. Bike looks a little weird now with the front tire still a wide off road tire, but in true MMM fashion I'm not going to replace something that ain't broke. :)

If you're feeling energetic, swap the front and rear tires so that the bigger on is in the rear. It will improve handling.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
