Ever get that sinking feeling?
« on: June 11, 2015, 12:42:58 PM »
Hello fellow DIYers,

Just thought I'd share a funny (eventually) thing that happened to me last week and wondered if anyone had other similar stories to share.

Here's the set-up:
Hot water heater (manufactured in 1993) starts tiny drips a few months back, so I start looking at the DIY route (never done something like this before). Fast-forward after some calls, lots of reading, talking, videos, borrowed equipment- I have a long, educational, rewarding and ultimately successful day of replacing my own hot water heater (gas fired). It was awesome. It works great, DW is happy, impressed, proud. I figure I saved $800 and since it (only! haha.) took me 8 hours, I even paid myself a decent rate for the experience!

*dusts off hands, pours a homebrew*

Fast-forward again to last week, DW is hopping in the shower for a rinse-off after a family bike ride with our 22 month DS and... "Hey, babe? It's not getting hot..."

*Oh SHIT (i.e. that sinking feeling)*

I head downstairs to investigate, imagining the worst- sniffing for gas leaks, look for water on the floor...

...and?

The power switch was switched off! HAHAHA relief and speculation that DS was briefly allowed to toddle in the basement at some point today whereupon he discovered a switch that needed flipping.

So it ended well- but oh, man, that sinking feeling was a big one.

Anyone have any similar stories?

Looking at your checking account and questioning why several thousand dollars are missing. Then you notice that the transfers you scheduled to vanguard finally went though.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
