How to repair bifold door handle with door closed?
« on: March 15, 2018, 12:29:13 PM »
We have a 7 pane wide bifold door between the living room and the outside. We use one of the outer doors to go in and out to our terrace. The door is now 8 years old.

Today I tried to open it in the normal way, I heard a knack, and the door wouldn't open. I think something broke inside the handle and we need to replace it. How do we do when the door is closed and won't open?

This handle is supposed to be pulled slightly outward and then moved upward 180 degrees to open the door. Now the handle will move out and upward, more easily than before, but the door doesn't open. It did open yesterday.

The brand is Wicona. I found an online manual, but that doesn't explain how to remove a handle.
As I can move the handle upward, I can remove both screws. Would that be enough to open the door?

It sounds like part of the mechanism broke inside.  Removing those two screws will likely allow you to remove the handle and gain access to the mechanism, but not open the door.  You'll probably need to use some sort of pliers/screwdriver/whatever to manually move the bit of mechanism that opens the door.

Things are looking brighter. I emailed the producer. Someone answered and asked us to test to open and push out  the next fold, and see whether the door with the broken handle would slide sidewards. It did! So now we can reach the side of the door. Dh opened it and found a loose part that doesn't look broken. We have taken a picture of it and mailed it back to the producer with the question if we can fix it ourselves.

The technical guy at the producer mailed us a technical drawing to take the door apart. But we found out that we still need to buy a new part. It is on it's way in the mail now.

New locking mechanism was received today. DH said the technical drawing was not very clear. But combining looking at the drawing and studying the inside of the door, he managed to put in the spare part. Door fixed. :-)

From now on we will focus on sing the normal door beside it most of the time and only use the bifold door when we need an extra wide door. Because the bifold door is still more flimsy and vulnerable than the normal door.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
