how to patch & paint this hole in drywall? UPDATE
« on: February 27, 2014, 07:17:00 PM »
I am not handy yet, so I am hoping this MMM community and the internets/YouTube can help me. My son has been creating this masterpiece on the wall next to his bed. He found a crack in the paint and started picking at it. I figure I can fix it faster than I can change the behavior. The hole is about 1 inch across and 3/4 inch deep, and the peeled off paper and paint is about a foot across. According to DIY Network website, I should get a drywall patch kit and fill the hole with drywall compound. How do I re-create the texture of the wall? How can I get paint to match?
We rent, so we definitely want to fix this to look like the rest of the wall if possible.
Thanks!

This should be an easy fix.  You can buy drywall repair that is pre mix or a product call "fix all".  The fix all you have to mix it, just follow the instruction.  Get a spatula and slap it on the damage surface.  If your wall has a texture, you can buy the texture in a can and spray it to match your wall.  Get a sample paint in a corner of the wall and take it to home depot.  Have them match the paint.  Get a quart and paint away.  If you are not satisfied with the result, get a half gallon and paint the big area.  This repair should satisfy your landlord.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5a7bok2OqGQ easy fix just a little bit harder as mentioned in your post because of the textured wall.  textured walls are annoying. Sand down edges to where the paint stops just to knock off any high spots. Float out compound to a little beyond edge area of paint, (your sons not only flicked off the paint, he's also peeled off the paper outer covering of the drywall that you see in gray damaging that surface as well to get to the "softer" white area behind it to pick at and needs to be covered as well to do a proper repair.) That video above does a good job explaining the basic process to you for a mud coat patch.

Since the paper is exposed, you'll want to waterproof the paper first.  Anything waterproofy will work, try spray-on shellac.  Once that dries, proceed with the repair as already advised.  If you try to mud or texture over the paper, you run the risk of the paper bubbling and creating weak areas of your repair, especially when it comes to the paint sticking in a durable way.

Textured walls are faster for the builder instead of getting their mudders to achieve an ASTM  Level 4/Level 5 finish for painting.

I agree they they're very annoying for repairs.

I'm just now getting around to posting the final bee-yoo-tee-ful renter's beige wall. You can see the texture isn't perfect, and it's more glossy than the rest of the wall, but it's not noticeable if you're not looking for it. The landlord will not know there was an excavation there. Thanks for all the advice!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
