how to make bees wax crayons?
« on: April 23, 2013, 05:15:35 AM »
this might be a little too crafty for this forum!  I have a bee hive and I am trying to utilise all that my bee's have to offer.  We have purified excess wax from old frames and want to use it to make beeswax crayons.  I have tried using a recipe I found on the net which is 50% wax and 50% soap, water and food colouring but the result is a very soft crayon and the food colouring stains my hands.  If there are any crayon making experts out there with safe non toxic recipes I could try I would love to hear about them.  The crayons are intended for young children who may put them in their mouths- I am making them for my grandchildren and as favourites for daughters wedding.

Sorry, I've never tried this, but I just want to cheer you on!
That said, I'm going to pitch in my 2c anyway.
I'd think you might have better luck buying powdered pigments from an artist's supply store, and working that directly into the wax, rather than trying to emulsify water-soluble food colouring in with the soap. Incorporating all those liquids is probably what makes the result so soft. Depending on the pigment, you might still get your hands stained, though.
