How to Install VOIP?
« on: November 25, 2013, 06:56:18 PM »
I looked over the VOIP options in IP Daley's Superguide. I think Future Nine is the service I want.

However, what am I missing in terms of how to set this up? I am looking for documentation that explains 1) what I need to buy to set up the service 2) any technical work I need to do 3) how to pay. I can't find the basics--even in the FAQs.

Is there any service that lays out how to get started using VOIP?

VOIP is a service.  You will need to install software and/or have specific hardware to access that service.  That will depend on the provider in question.

I'm sure someone will be along to answer your question more specifically, but I just wanted to clear that up.

Your question was akin to someone asking "how do I install the internet?"  ;)

Heya OT!

Okay... first this: VoIP and the return of the home phone

1) Should be answered by the upper read.
2) Again, should be answered by the upper read.
3) You can pay F9 via Paypal or Google Checkout. You deposit a balance and they withdraw accordingly as charges occur.

Bulk of the more nitty-gritty detail setup at least on the critical bits of F9 service are here for the ATA and here for the dialplan. For devices not listed (there really aren't any current selling ATAs in their FAQ), the VOIP.ms wiki can be of use for specific device configuration when cross-referenced with the F9 settings. Other than that, Nitzan and company are good folk and provide good support when you need it.

Any remaining questions, you know how to find me. ;)

Haha. Thanks! I do know that, but I can see how my post was unclear.

I work in the internets so I get the VOIP thing. =-)

I am pretty sure I want Future Nine. I just do not know the steps to get it set up.

Cool! Thank you. I am going to work on this over the weekend and see how far I get with it all.

Much appreciated!

Happy Thanksgiving, to you and Arebelspy!

Thanks, you two, for your help with "installing" VOIP. ;-)

I ended up signing with VOIPO. I had to go with simple this time.

Possibly dumb question...How would I have a phone in the kitchen if the modem is in a bedroom? Will I need to string cords around the house? Or, do I need to move the modem's location?

This is loosely answered in the post I linked you before... but your easiest, simplest solution will likely be to just purchase a multi-handset wireless set from Vtech or Uniden. You shouldn’t need to drop more than $25.

Your house may have what I've heard referred to as a bridge - it's a box on the wall (inside or outside your house, usually where the phone line comes in).  If you have one, it'll have a standard phone plug which you can disconnect.  Once you are completely disconnected from the phone company's lines (for us, no dial tone), you can plug the VoIPo box into a convenient phone outlet and it will ring all your usual phones.

At least that's what we've done for the last decade or so.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
