How to dispose of old tires?
« on: June 03, 2017, 09:21:58 AM »
A tire on my mother's car recently got a puncture right where the tread meets the sidewall. I bought her a used tire at a local tire shop. They no longer take old tires, so they made us keep it. How do I dispose of this tire for free, or at least as cheaply as possible? The company that does trash collection for my city doesn't accept tires.

Try taking it to another tire store.  There will likely be some "tire disposal fee" required by your state.

I had assumed that, like old oil, all tire stores were required to take old tires (and charge a disposal fee) but that likely is different by state.

Figure on paying a couple bucks ($3 up here, IIRC) to dispose of the tire.
Some towns have an annual cleanup/hazardous waste day where they'll take tires (not sure if it's free or not).

This is going to vary by municipality.
I would look this up on your city/county's website.
Enter into google: "[your county/city] car tire disposal" and the info should be there.

If the information is not there, call or stop by your local transfer-station/dump/ecocentre* and ask them.

I'm surprised the tire shop didn't take it - you could try another but unless there's an established fee set by the local/state government they'll likely charge you more than anywhere else.  Many munis have set disposal fees though.

*it seems there are dozens of ways to re-label what used to be called 'the dump'.

Ask the manager of the place that sold you the tire.
I have a hard time believing that a place that sells tires doesn't have to take old tires - it's promoting people to dump their old tires wherever they think they can get away with it.

They do take tires....  They just charge you for it.  Check your bill next time you get a new set of tires.

They specifically told me they're unable to take old tires any more. There is no fee for it on the bill.

So wait... you're telling me that you purchased tires from a tire shop, got them installed, and then they sent you home with your old tires?  Was this place reputable?

I had a similar situation while dealing with road service for a travel trailer blowout. The company got paid well to replace the tire, but refused to take the old one back to the shop. I offered to pay whatever that going rate for disposal was. The mechanic told me that getting rid of old tires was such a PITA, that they don't want them, period.

This might be state specific, but in my state, a tire can be cut into 3 pieces and then put into the trash.  My uncle worked for years for Waste Management and told me that this was because cut up tires can be compacted where full tires can't.  If you have a sawzall, it's not all that hard.  I separately cut the beads then cut the tread into 3 pieces and throw them into a trash bag.

I purchased a beat up old property that had a bunch of junk and in the course of clean up discovered about 50 old tires.
Called my buddy at local tire shop and asked him how to get rid of them.   He put me in touch with the same company that picks up his junk tires and they swung by and picked up these.  Don't remember exactly how much, but thinking $2.00 to $5.00 per tire?   Start with your local tire shop.
