How do I hang a quilt on the wall?
« on: February 23, 2016, 07:27:26 AM »
We are trying to pretty up our spare bedroom without spending any money. I want to hang a beautiful hand-made quilt on the wall that we were given for our anniversary. It's about 3' x 5', landscape orientation. It doesn't have any tabs or anything.

What's the best way to do this in a reversible way, so that if we decide to later use the quilt on a kid's bed we can do so? Should I hand sew some tabs? Some sort of magnet system that doesn't require sewing?

Curtain rod with clips (think of a super sized cloths hanger for trousers).

You can pick up compression type bar hangers or even ones that have a row of marbles in a slot (you slide the edge of the quilt into the slot, and the marbles hold the quilt steady). I've seen them at Michaels and Hobby Lobby.

If you're trying to go as cheaply as possible but without any damage to the quilt, I'd hang a thin curtain rod that comes with clips instead of rings (like this )or very tight fishing line/rope line (would require wall anchors), and then use clothespins (you can get pretty ones or paint some cheap wooden ones).

If you want to hide the hanging system (and I typically do):
-I hand sew a hanging sleeve onto large quilts, that runs the full length of the quilt to give it the most support. Then I run a piece of wood through the quilt.

-You can use a traditional method, use a contrasting thread so it is easy to pick out later:

-Or this machine method, which will sew through the front of your quilt, but isn't easy to see: http://weallsew.com/easy-diy-quilt-hanging-sleeve-almost-entirely-by-machine/  I'm lazy, so I really like this one.

-For smaller quilts, I put tabs into the corners (triangular) and run a piece of wood across the quilt.  I have a 4" square quilt hung this way, but I prefer the previous method.

Some people will attach velcro to a bar that they mount on the wall, and then attach velcro to their quilt. (This can also be done with magnets.)

I've also seen people sew rings onto the back of quilts (or even soda can tabs) and put those on nails. But I think your quilt would be too large to support that way.

If you don't want to hide the hanging system, clips do work, or you could also mount a bar like a towel rod and hang the quilt over it.

I did this to decorate my kids rooms by sewing some ribbon I had into little loops on the back and then hanging on nails. It worked well, took about 10 minutes and was free (used stuff I already had). I could easily take the loops off by picking out a few threads.

I sewed tabs on one, and hung it on DH's grandmother's interesting old walking stick.
