Help - how to remove old aluminum window sashes for cleaning?
« on: December 11, 2016, 01:17:22 PM »
Our home, which was built in 1950, has aluminum windows. (We are in New Jersey). I don't mind the aesthetic but they are so gummed up it often takes two of us to close the sashes when we are taking down/installing storm windows/screens in the fall/spring. So much so that we only switch out the screens/storms on a select few windows and just put up with 87 degree inside temps during the summer.

I would love to get the windows in better functioning condition, so I am willing to do the arm work to clean or de-grease them, whatever they need. I just can't get the sashes off - they are old and so don't have the convenient design of newer window sashes that are so easily removable. I've attached some pictures. Is there any way to get the sashes off without taking the frame apart? Or maybe there is a way to get them functioning better without taking the sashes off (silicone spray?) Thanks for the help.

I thought I remembered that you could use Wright's Brass Polish or Cream on aluminum but can't get the new owner's site to work right with my browser to verify that this is the case.  Googling around for alternatives gave me a link to a product that seems like it would work as the frames it was demonstrated on seem to be nearly as in need of attention as yours --- http://thepolishguy.com/tag/polishing-an-aluminum-window/.  Autosol is the product and was also mentioned on another link Google suggested.

Best of luck!
