Help deciding on a paint color for exterior of my home
« on: July 27, 2016, 06:48:22 PM »
I'm only painting the stucco of this home. We are keeping the trim color. Other than white, or "stucco" color, do you mustachians have any good color ideas that would go well with it?

Thank you in advance,

If you're wanting something slightly different but complimentary to that trim, I'd look for cool grays.

SW 9136 Lullaby - more of a blue gray
SW 6525 Rarified Air - lighter cool gray

If you wanted to go a bit more interesting, I'd look at the colors in the very pale blue family. I wouldn't trust the accuracy of the photo to match up with any online paint sample, but I think something similar (but not necessarily this color if it doesn't look quite right).

Basically I'd find a paint sample card where they have the array of shades, match up the trim color, then go two or three shades lighter, or darker.

SW 9144 Moonmist
^this seems like it might be a few shades lighter than the trim and a bluer color

SW 9146 Faded Flaxflower
^ seems a few shades darker and might be interesting contrast

No matter what, I do suggest getting a few samples and painting a few 2 foot squares on the wall near the trim so you can get the full effect in daylight.

I would go with a light muted yellow or a light muted green. I think life is too short to live in a beige/white house.  I would look around at the other houses and get inspiration.

Medium yellow.  Bonus: Those red chairs will pop.

Just remember that colors look a lot more saturated on the side of a house than they do on the swatch, so go a shade or two less bold than you might be otherwise inclined.

I think that, without repainting the trim, you'd be best off with a brick red or a dark grey.

The yellow or green ideas would be good too, but not with the existing trim color.

Never mind; I like I.P. Daley's idea! :D

Try the Sherwin-Williams color visualizer tool they have online.  You upload a photo and choose areas to fill with color.  It's pretty easy to use and gives a fairly good idea of what your house will look like when painted.

I would go with a cream color to help the trim color pop. I also think a lighter color will be better for hiding imperfections in the stucco. I also suggest using an elastomeric paint to seal any light cracks.

Yellow is a classic combination with blue.
Otherwise a muted light purple or violet could be nice.

Do you having any flowering plants around the house? I would take that into consideration as well.

Touche. :)

Though, it it doesn't mean that I have to take it.

Thanks for input folks, I was hopeful that someone would throw out a color scheme that wouldn't require me to pay the extra $$$ to have the trim painted too - it adds considerably to the cost. As it stands, I may shell out the extra cash to change the color scheme all together. (likely painting the trim white, the house a mid-tone gray, and the shutters black)

Fuchsia.

Make sure to post a before/after.... this paint job no matter the color will make such a huge difference getting rid of all those stains and stuff

Anyway if you are doing the trim I really like charcoal blueish gray color with white trim:
I think blueish grays and white go together real well in lots of different shades

I didn't look up the number, but it's sherwin Williams 'blonde'....it's a beautiful, warm yellow and would look great.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts ,  we put up a couple of greys up last night ,  really liked a darker one at first until I made a bigger square and now think it may be too dark. Looking like week land on one of the logged greys with trim painted white.

I wouldn't go too light as light gray becomes indistinguishable from dingy. There's a house sort of near me where they were going for "castle gray" but they ended up "dingy fake castle dreck". Not streetview-able, unfortunately.

I have a very similar color to that darker gray used on the interior of my house so I attached a picture I don't know if it help you.

I would be slightly concerned with the lighter Gray because it is similar color to cinderblock if you don't want your house looking like a bunker and lighter colors will show their inevitable dirtyness easier

I like the biggest swatch in your photo. I think with white trim you'll have a sweet looking house. I can recommend Dove White from Benjamin Moore as a great trim color for inside and out.
I used to pick the building colors for a college in Florida. I can tell you that if your color has any blue in it, even if it looks gray up close, you will see the blue from afar.

I actually like the dark gray (largest swatch on the wall). I think it looks nice with the white/light blue-gray trim.

I vote for the rich dark gray.  My house is one of the darker houses on the block (a brownish gray) and it looks really sharp.

I know you were trying to avoid painting the trim/shutters, but wow... that looks fabulous! It's like a completely different house. Great job there! :D
