hanging gymnastics rings from a wooden beam?
« on: December 04, 2014, 12:27:12 PM »
My new place has a large second floor under the A frame roof that I want to turn into a gym. I have all the equipment I want and plenty of space. I'd like to hang my rings from the central horizontal beam that b runs the length of the roof. Landlord is cool with putting up some hooks; what are my best options in terms of hardware? I weigh a bit over 100 lbs and the beam is about 10 feet off the floor.

I'd just pre-drill and use a heavy duty eye screw from the hardware store.  They usually only cost a couple bucks.

I agree with GuitarStv, but wanted to suggest a couple things.

First, don't use open hooks, you want closed hooks to make sure the rope doesn't slip off. (like in his picture)

Second, use a very long screw section. The picture shows a hook with very little screw, and you are going to be hanging from the hook, so you want the screw to go way in deep and not risk ripping out. So I suggest a screw section about 3 inches long, and don't drill the pilot hole too large, it should be really tight. The hook itself doesn't need to be that thick in terms of size, but it should screw a good distance into the wood.

Absolutely agree on the closed eye screws. Be sure to use some kind of locking link to attach your equipment to the eyes, like this:

Even better than a lag screw would be a through-bolt from the side, if there is room.  Then use the bolt to support something like these:

You want the screw to go in horizontally rather than vertically, so that you don't pull it straight out. A through bolt would be better.
