Garage Suite DIYers?
« on: February 13, 2019, 12:45:32 PM »
I'm not quite at this stage yet, but has anyone ever built a garage suite in here? I'm looking for some interesting plans for the future and a point towards some good resources to help me along.

I’ve been inside a few & I’m also curious.

That is the most modern one I’ve seen.

This is a garden suite that has had some local press.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately myself.  I have a pretty large back yard with a detached one car garage.  I was thinking about build a large garage but can't justify the cost.  However, perhaps if I include a small suite where I can rent this out on Air BnB or even rent it monthly it could finance my whole construction project.  I was thinking I'd get more from the Air BnB and I would need to put a full kitchen etc. in.

Has anyone tried this?  How's it working out?  Include pictures:)

I’ve also found some plans I like here.

1&3 are good. There are a few more on the same site but I can’t find them tonight.

EDIT. I found the others that caught my eye.

Before I built a suite, I'd calculate the ROI on using extra space as storage rental - both ambient and heated.

Awesome, thanks for the links K-ice. Sorry HipGnosis, you'd calculate the ROI on using the garage suite as storage? I'm not quite following. I'm thinking for me that once I acquire some more advanced carpentry skills that it would be a project to do when FIRE'd. My plan would to hit my number and know how much the project would cost roughly, work additionally for the project cost and then build after that. Long term this would be potential housing for family. I think a garden suite would make more sense in my case because it would be occupied most likely by someone with an intellectual/physical disability - a long flight of stairs wouldn't be ideal.

This garden suite plan is for a senior. She currently sleeps in the loft but the kitchen & main floor living space is designed to age-in-place

I meant storage space you rent out, like self-storage closets and mini-garages, or seasonal storage of boats and classic cars, etc.

That's pretty awesome.  I would love to build something like that (with a larger garage/shop space).

I thought this was cool too.  I emailed the company, they don't offer this model anymore.

They're not as cheap as I'd hoped - even a relatively small one is more expensive than my 1825 sq ft house was in Arizona back in 2013...and that included a 10k sq foot lot underneath the house, lol.

Smaller than a garage suite but here is a DIY tiny home plan that looks interesting.

I am not serious enough to pay $89 for the plan but I have watched many of her videos and like the detail she provides on

http://www.ana-white.com/

I have a list of to-do storage type projects already.
